What's this Challenge about?
Summary of the challenge
Silk Road left many mysteries in Central Asia that are yet awaiting to be solved. Ancient ethnic fashions, customs and manners are among of them. Murals left in ruins along the road give us clues to approach such mysteries. The mural of Balalyktepa is considered as a painting either of the Hephthalite or Western Turkic Khaganatethe. In 1950s, the mural was once discovered by a Russian archaeologist, and then lost again with only remaining a copy of the painting. We had no choice but to study from the copy for a long time. Recently, a part of the original mural was found at National Termez Archaeological Museum in Uzbekistan by chance. That was really great news, however degradation stage of the mural is serious because aging of the conservation and restoration materials has been progressing fast to make the mural may be collapsed soon. It is emergency that requires conservation treatment and restoration of the mural as early as we can.
