▶︎1. Greetings

Hello. My name is Ayumi Ueda, and I'm a singer, based in Boston and New York, performing with a mission to connect the world as one, through the power of singing.

As leader of an international vocal ensemble called "Women of the World," I sought to create a multicultural ensemble that not only crossed boundaries musically, but was committed to peace in its daily practice and interactions.

Constantly searching for new genres to explore, the ensemble has performs in 32 languages (and counting) including Bulgarian, Cuban, Ladino, Brazilian, Turkish, African, Haitian, Indian, Italian and Japanese music, and has extensively toured North America, Asia and Europe. Through our music, Women of the World continues to serve as cultural ambassadors of peace and unity.

To continue and expand my journey to collaborate with other musicians from around the world, I have launched this project "100 Voices, 1 Heart” with the vision to deliver hope for peace, and reach out to as many people around the world as possible.

My goal, by the year 2020, is to create a platform through the creation of the "100 Voices, 1 Heart" Choir with singers from 100 different countries, in which the participants can connect with one another through song, beyond the boundaries of country, culture and language, ultimately using positive energy from this experience to continue delivering the message of peace outside of this platform, to the world.

As the first project of “100 Voices, 1 Heart," I've decided to try a crowdfunding campaign for the first time in my life, in order to record and create a music video of a very famous Japanese song, familiar to all generations, called “Wings to Fly (Tsubasa O Kudasai)." The song reminds us of what peace means.

I would like to make this dream come true with support from each one of you who resonates with this concept to spread the message of hope and peace to the world.

Thank you so much!

▶︎2. Ayumi Ueda Profile

Born and raised in Tokyo, Ayumi Ueda began singing at the age of four. Influenced by singing with her father, she became fascinated with music such as folk, country, and ethnic music, and decided to pursue music as a career.

In January 2007, she enrolled in Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. While at Berklee, she created her first large scale music project, Women of the World, as a path by which to connect her love of music and culture with her strong determination toward world peace and understanding.

During this time, she also received a huge response from her fusion of crystal singing bowls and traditional Japanese music as a form of music therapy.

Ayumi graduated from Berklee College of Music in May 2010 with a degree in Professional Music emphasizing performance, world music research, and music therapy.

As a solo artist, leader of the Women of the World, and a sound and Reiki Healer, Ayumi continues to work both in USA and Japan as a multi-talented spiritual artist.

▶︎3. My thoughts on “Peace” and “War”

“What are we fighting for?”
“Who are we fighting with?”
“Why can’t we live in peace together?”

My mother was born and raised in Hiroshima, and these were the questions that I wondered about many times through my childhood.

When I was 8 years old, I watched one of the most haunting movies about the tragedy of World War II called “Grave of the Fireflies” by Studio Ghibli, which made a huge impact on my perspective about war.

Country against country, religion against religion… but the ones who are actually fighting, on the battlefield, are us, human-beings against human-beings, who have a soul and heart; who bleed the same.

As a child, it was truly heartbreaking to me to learn that war creates a tragedy - humans kill humans across countries, in the name of "protecting their loved ones?" By depriving other people of their loved ones? It did not make sense to me as a child, that people would prolong such a negative chain like this.

In 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbor killed 2,403 Americans and wounded 1,178 others. As the tragedies spiraled, in 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima, instantly killing over 80,000 people, including 12 American POWs. The total death toll rose to 192,020.

When overwhelmed by hopelessness, I encountered this passage in a book titled "Magical Compass (Maho No Compass)" by a Japanese artist, Akihiro Nishino:

“As an artist, we might not be able to eliminate war, but we can stop it.”

His words made me realize that one of the roles as an artist is to bring people more opportunities: time to feel joy, hope, love, peace and connections, so that they would not have even the slightest chance to think about war, fight against one another, or consider bombing or hurting another.

Many of you might say I'm too idealistic, but imagine that you have friends in every country and continent. It would be impossible to drop a bomb where your dear friends and their loved ones live.

"I like the music of the country," "I have been to that country," "I like the food of the country," etc...

Start having any connection with a person of a country other than yours, no matter how small it may be. The more connections you make, the more personal they will become to you: their culture, religion, music, food, nature, language, etc... We start to care more about one another. Things happening in the world wouldn't just be "other people's problem," but it would become "my people's problem."

The mission of this project "100 Voices, 1 Heart" is building a strong connection among the 100 singers from all around the world, in addition to creating an amazing album and music video. I hope that through this music-making process and sharing the "feeling of peace and hope," the participants will develop a deeper understanding of themselves and one another.

I believe the process of connecting and listening to one another’s hearts and voices would be a symbolic action to show the world that unity can be accomplished, and a time of peace can be a reality in our lifetime and actions of peace, possible in our daily lives.

▶︎4. The power of music to unite people… Story of creating Women Of The World”

“Music has such power to connect people beyond race, religion, country or language barrier.” - Here’s how I saw this in my life.

13 years ago, after graduating from high school, I had a surgery to treat my Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome which I had been dealing with for my entire life.

One month before the surgery, I had an urge to visit the United States. So, I decided to go on a solo trip from West Coast to East Coast, knowing that I wouldn't be able to perform normal mouth-jaw activities for the following 6 months of jaw-rehabilitation.

Santa Monica, CA was the first city I visited during the trip. At the Hosteling International where I stayed at, I met a dear lady from Israel.

Back then, I could barely speak English nor Hebrew, but somehow the song and dance I learned in my elementary school came to mind. So, I started singing for her.

It’s called “Mayim Mayim.”

Her face immediately brightened up. She said, “Oh my God, that’s an old Israeli folk song! How do you know this song?”

She taught me that this was a song to celebrate drawing water from the "springs of salvation."

It was a joyful moment for both of us to find out that we had something in common to share, and my knowing this folk song made our new friendship a close one. Such a happy memory!

This experience helped me realize that I have a desire to make this world a happier and loving place through my music, even if the outcome may be small. For that, I knew I needed to delve into learning and understanding different cultures, history, and music of the world!

So, I decided to study abroad at Berklee College of Music, where there were students from over 90 different countries.

During the three years of my time at Berklee, I learned a variety of folk music from Bulgaria, Ghana, Ireland, Middle East, and many more regions of the world.

While it was amazing to develop my career as a solo singer, I started to feel that I wanted to create music with other people who believed in the same values and visions to connect the world through music regardless of our differences.

So, in 2008, I started scouting for members to form my own international vocal group, and that became Women of the World. In the beginning, we had a group of 7 singers, including myself from Japan and other members from Italy, USA, Serbia, Pakistan, Brazil, Greece and Mexico.

Our first performance was at a small concert hall at Berklee. Slowly, people started to recognize our work, and we began getting opportunities to perform both on and off campus.

In the last 10 years, there were several member changes, and even though the group has experienced lots of ups and downs, I am very grateful to be able to continue our work till now.

One of our recent memorable experiences was that we won the International A Cappella Championship “ACA Open” at the prestigious Carnegie Hall last year. This enabled us to expand our work, not only performing at numerous concert venues worldwide but also to host cultural-exchange workshops in many schools in the US.

I would like to utilize my experience and global connection, gained through the activities of the Women of The World, to promote the “100 Voices, 1 Heart" Project and in celebration of our 10th anniversary.

▶︎5. The goal of the "100 Voices, 1 Heart" Project

The goal of the "100 Voices, 1 Heart" Project is to recruit singers from 100 countries around the world by 2020, to create a platform/choir that transcends national, cultural and language boundaries.

There are three main purposes of the "100 Voices, 1 Heart" Project:

1. Singers who agree with 'Delivering messages of peace through music' will interact with one another, deepen their understanding of one another's culture, and bring home the experience gained from the project to their own communities.

2. Through rehearsing and performing together, these singers will become role models for the younger generation all over the world to overcome differences in culture, language, religion and race.

3. To give powerful performances, courage and hope to people all over the world, and to continue making art and engaging in activities as symbols of world peace.

As of the end of May 2018, the number of participating countries is 54 countries, but over the next 2 years, I will continue my effort to make this project ultimately grow to include singers from 100 countries.

Then, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, I would like to send out the message of peace to the world!

From 2019 to 2020, I would like to invite the "100 Voices, 1 Heart" Choir to Japan, and have a world peace concert.

▶︎6. About the song "Wings To Fly (English/Japanese Version)

A song I love from a young age, "Tsubasa O Kudasai (Wings To Fly)."

When I was about to fall apart,
When I was uncertain,
When I wondered what peace was,
A song I always sang, while looking up at the sky.

There is no border in the sky.
Everywhere we are, we are connected.
It was a song that makes me think of these things.

As Japan gathers a lot of attention for the Tokyo Olympic Games, I started thinking, "Let's aim to create a peaceful world! From Japan to the world." That is why I chose the song "Wings To Fly (Tsubasa O Kudasai)" as the first project.

▶︎12. Conclusion

Finally,
I can never achieve this project alone.
That is why I wanted to take on this challenge.

This would not be one person's effort, I think that it is a big, big challenge that would also carry the thoughts of all who wish for world peace from the bottom of our hearts.

Nowadays, our world seems to be filled with sad news that makes us want to hide or close our eyes, at times, out of sadness. But with singers from around the world, I will do my utmost to deliver hope and courage.

Thank you very much for your support!

Sincerely,
Ayumi Ueda
