Subtle yet fancy designs are Nishijin Gasuri's(Nishijin Ikat) strength, in turn being one branch of Nishijin silk fabrics.
However, in our golden age we had 120 silk shops, of which only 7 remain today, with only 7 artisans left, as well. The youngest artisan left is Kasai Ikuko, who is affiliated to the group "Itohen universe" (Thread universe), and all the other artisans are between 65 and 80 years old.
"All we can do is try to preserve the craft of Nishijin Gasuri"
"With this aim in mind, we must create Nishijin Gasuri items which are useful for people's daily lives, manufacture as many as we can, and make them available to our customers"
These are our thoughts as we head for our workshops and prepare new items. We are determined to take the challenge. Please help support our efforts to preserve the craft of Nishijin Gasuri into the future, a craft which is such an important part of traditional culture. It would mean the world to us!
