Experience Timbering at the Foot of Mt. Fuji and Making Your Own Woodwork at Fujimock Fes!

What's this Challenge about?

Fujimock Fes is an event for anyone to get deep in touch with woodwork techniques and culture!

1. Fujimock Fes participants hike into the forest at the foot of Mt. Fuji with professional lumberjacks to obtain natural wood. After being dried, the wood will be taken to our Fab Lab in Kamakura, where the participants will learn wood fabrication techniques using our digital and traditional manufacturing equipment. This will offer first-hand experience of the 21st-century style product creation in which individual makers are involved in the process from creation of the data as the base of the product.

2. Fujimock Fes is supported by the young lumberjacks of Tenkomori, the professional forest guides of Whole Earth Nature School, the 21st-century, experimental craft workshop, Fab Lab Kamakura, and various creators in and out of Japan.

3. Fujimock Fes is a rare opportunity to meet different, interesting people including professional lumberjacks and huntsmen, and to get deep experience of the forest of Fuji cypresses.

4. We’re moving into the time when individual makers can create “almost anything” on their own! At Fujimock Fes, we strive to learn how to make as well as to find ways to vitalize the culture and economy of the region. Some of the Fuji cypress products made by participants will be sold internationally. We hope Fujimock Fes will offer a new way of “making things” in Japan and deliver the appeal of our country’s rich natural resources to the rest of the world.

The first Fujimock Fes was held in 2012 with the subsidies by the Forestry Agency. Over a hundred people participated and enjoyed spending time learning about woodwork and product creation. This year, without the governmental support, we’re starting off with the funding process. We aim to help each participant gain sufficient skills to become a “maker,” and to find a way to utilize more of our natural wood resources and ultimately revitalize the rich forests of our country.

Power to the Japanese Forests! Power to Individual Makers!

This year, we're starting over Fujimock Fes from the fund-raising process. I'd be lying if I said I was 100% certain everything was going to sail smoothly, but I can say this: I'm thrilled! I'm thrilled to be offering you an opportunity to experience the woodwork process from the very beginning to the end. You will learn so much in our program, from survival skills in the woods to the cutting-edge digital fabrication skills. Knowledge on your materials and fabrication skills are both essential to be a “maker.” I hope this festival will be the first step for many to get to know Japan's many forests and gain confidence in their ability to “make.” We're ready to offer necessary support and assistance to each of our participants.

When we think about forests, we need to think in longer time spans as in decades and centuries, which isn't easy in the current mindset surrounding our society and economy. But for this reason, we're determined to continue this festival at least for another five years. It is our hope that we can find support to build a sustainable community through this crowdfunding campaign.

We're very much looking forward to your participation and support! Thank you so much!

Takeshi Maeda: Head of Supporters/Lumberjack
People tend to think our job is to cut down trees. It’s true, but many don’t know that cutting trees help nurture understory vegetation by letting more light in and protect the land from rain storms and natural disasters. Our job of nurturing and protecting forests leads to nurturing and protecting our land. With the decline in the wood prices, we can’t really say there’s a bright future for the timber industry and the mountains of Japan. Fujimock Fes, however, gives me hope. I believe the most important function of this festival is to create a network of young lumberjacks and those living in the city, who, together, are going to create our future. It’s a place for them to share the rare experience of going deep into forests and creating something that can be used in their daily lives. To me, this extraordinary, playful festival seems to be a bright new light for all of us who hope to pass on Japan’s great, rich mountains and forests to the next generations!

At Fujimock Fes, you witness a wonderful chemical reaction of learning!
It’s where lumberjacks meet graphic designers, hunters and system engineers. They go through “try and error” over and over, working together on the same materials. The lumberjacks will find out what becomes of the trees they cut down. Everyone present will play the role of an artisan, adding new values to the material and the product. It’s a magical space that brings light to the future of our forests. I hope more and more people get to experience this wonderful festival!

Sae Suzuki: Fujimock Fes 2012 participant

I got to learn the importance of timberwork and how hard it is by experiencing it first-hand. Going through the whole process of fabrication using the material I cut down myself helped me see manufacturing as something more personal, something directly related to my everyday life. Another thing I learned is the importance of design in creating both forests and products. I understand our forestry industry is now facing various issues. I’m sure this event will be a model and springboard for a brighter future for all the forests and everyone in the forestry field.
